Church Micro #1457 Waldron
All Saints Church Waldron dates from the 12th Centuary and is
believed to be built upon an earlier Saxon Church.
In the mid 19th centuary there were substantial alterations and
additions to the building which the Victorians carried out with
enthusiasm.
The bell tower is the oldest part of the church and faces the
south downs.
On the grass outside the main door there is a Saxon font, one of
only three surving fonts in Sussex. According to local ledgend it
was removed from the church by Cromwells soldiers in the 17th
century and rolled down the hill at the back of the church. It was
re-discovered in 1907 at Dengates Farm where it was being used as a
cattle trough.
The graveyard is a wildflower conservation area where you will
find a number of interesting graves.
Enter the Churchayard via the Lytch Gate which dates from 1807
and was built by the Huth familyin memory of Louis Huth 1821-1905
Squire of Possingworth.
