In 1902, the Georgetown and Lexington Traction Company opened a 12 mile long line between these 2 cities. Traction lines were primarily built to carry passengers and were generally more lightly constructed than steam railroads, but some railroads did substantial freight business. Traction lines were powered by electricity, usually carried on an overhead wire, but sometimes on a 3rd rail.
In 1903, the Blue Grass Traction Company began operating between Paris and Lexington and in 1904 the 2 companies were merged, keeping the Blue Grass Traction Company name. In 1905, the Central Kentucky Traction Company opened between Lexington and Versailles and in 1907, the Frankfort and Versailles Traction Company opened between these 2 cities. Shortly afterward, it was merged into the Central Kentucky Traction Company. In 1910, the Lexington and Interurban Railway Company was built between Lexington and Nicholasville. All of the interurbans were merged into the Kentucky Traction and Terminal Company in 1911, which also operated streetcars in Frankfort and Lexington. Various extensions were promoted through the years, but none were ever built.
The KT&T was very innovative and delivered ice from the plant in Lexington to the surrounding communities in refrigerated box motors. They transported milk from the Elmendorf Dairy Farm, as well. The company remained profitable untl the inevitable proliferation of affordable automobiles and improved roads ate into the profits. Finally, a strike in 1934 ended all interurban operations, but the streetcars in Lexington survived until 1938.
The route between Georgetown and Lexington ran exactly where US 25 is today and no traces remain that I am aware of. If you are travelling on I 75 between the northern junction of 75 and 64 and Newtown Pike and look to the north on the UK Agricultural property, you can see an embankment in the middle of a field with a tunnel through it. I've been told that it is the right of way for the traction company, but it doesn't seem to match up with maps I've seen.
