Geocache Description:

Building Bridges to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, USA

Pittsburgh is a city located in the north-eastern part of the United States and in the south-western part of the state of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh was founded in 1758 at the junction of three rivers: the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers and the head of the Ohio River. Pittsburgh is known by many nicknames: the City of Bridges, for its 446 bridges; the Steel City, for its more than 300 steel related businesses; and the Golden Triangle, for it distinct triangular shape of the downtown region. The city was left for dead after the collapse of the steel industry in the 1980’s. But gradually, Pittsburgh weathered its rocky transition from an economy built on manufacturing to one driven by cutting edge technology. Many major technology companies call Pittsburgh home. Pittsburgh is known for its unique skyline, the funiculars (or inclines), the professional sports teams - Pittsburgh Penguins (Ice Hockey), Pittsburgh Steelers (Football) and Pittsburgh Pirates (Baseball) and for its many distinct cultural neighbourhoods. Pittsburgh is also known for its unique dialect and language known as “Pittsburgh-ese”. If you ever get to travel to Pittsburgh, don’t forget to ask “How YINZ doin?”

GC71N35 – Building Bridges to Sydney

At Wp1 (published coordinates) here in Sydney, search for something that will give you the coordinates for Wp2 in Pittsburgh. With those coordinates, you will also discover a clue word. Email both the coordinates and the clue word from Wp1 to your geomate in Pittsburgh. Similarly, your geomate will go to their Wp1 in Pittsburgh and find a set of coordinates for Wp2 here in Sydney and a clue word that you will use to discover the cache GZ in Sydney. Your geomate will email you both the coordinates and the clue word. Continue this process exchanging coordinates and clue words until you have four clue words each. At Wp4, you will discover a clue word only to send to your geomate, no coordinates.

** Tip - All waypoints use the same hiding style to give you the information you seek. Once you've found the first, you'll then know what to look for.

Finding GZ:

Step 1: Using the code A=1, B=2, C=3… Z=26, convert each clue word you get from your Pittsburgh geomate to a value by adding together the numbers that correspond to the letters in that word, eg BICYCLE = 2 + 9 + 3 + 25 + 3 + 12 + 5 = 59. Add together the values of the four clue words. We’ll call this total “Alpha”.

Step 2: Using the code A=26, B=25, C=24... Z=1, convert each of the same four clue words to a value by adding together the numbers that correspond to the letters in that word. Add together the values of the four clue words. We’ll call this total “Beta”.

Complete the following calculations to reveal the whereabouts of the Sydney cache GZ.

S33° (Alpha – 433).(Beta – 187)

E151° (Alpha – 467).(Beta + 185)

Don’t forget to take some photos of your locations to send to your geomate. I’m sure they would love to see where you have been. Please don't post any spoiler photos in your logs that give away locations here in Sydney.

** Please Note **

Only those geocachers who actually visit GZ here in Sydney and sign the physical log themselves are elligble to claim a find of this geocache.

Enjoy the hunt!
