Geocache Description:

UIG OVERVIEW
One of a short series of caches placed at historic sites around the Isle of Skye.

Uig is Norse for 'sheltered bay', and this ancient coastal village is the main settlement of Trotternish. The bay is surrounded on three sides by high ground, so any road approach will give a splendid view of the village and its setting.

Today, Uig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal from where ferries sail to Harris and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides.

Overlooking the bay is Captain Fraser's Folly, a round tower on the south side of the bay, built on a whim in the mid 1800s. Captain Fraser owned parts of Snizort and all of Kilmuir to the north of Uig in the 19th century.

Uig Bay, kidney-shaped and backed by a fine raised beach, is thought by many as being among Skye’s best; it is certainly popular with seabirds, including great northern diver, while the black, basalt cliffs above are patrolled by golden and white-tailed eagle. In season you will find whitethroat, willow warblers, blackcap and sedge warbler among the gorse, and sandpiper, eider, cormorant and much more out on the water.

Uig used to be known for its witch population, and in 1880 an Elder of the Free Church brought what was probably the last charge of witchcraft, on this occasion against a mother and her 5 daughters.

The cache is located above the village, just a short distance along the road to the Quiraing; it can be gathered as a drive by - but do, please, park considerately.
