Geocache Description:

It's fun driving along Route 9 and seeing all of the places where Route 9 was rerouted over the years. Here is one of the places where it is obvious what it used to be.

A quick walk and grab on an old section of old Route 9. Park on Barney Road where the rocks block this old section. The cache is in the middle of the road, almost! Enjoy the view of the river and think about where the road used to go, as you watch traffic whizzing by on the newer road.

You are looking for a painted pill bottle in the center of something blocking that road. It will be winter-friendly, to a point, though the road is no longer plowed! Wheelchair accessible when there is no snow.

From reviewing Vermont Agency of Transportation map archives it appears that this section of Route 9 was rerouted between 1931 and 1949. The maps aren't very detailed and there is a gap in the archives. You can see the slight dip in the section of Route 9 on this map from 1931: http://vtransmap01.aot.state.vt.us/Maps/TownMapSeries/BENNINGTON_Co/BENNINGTON/BENNINGTON_1931.tif. Subsequent maps show the roadway just a bit north and before crossing a bridge, and Barney Road appears. I think this piece of road was open until a few years ago but is now closed to traffic.

This is third in a growing series of caches marking old sections of Route 9 between Brattleboro and Bennington.
