Troy Meadow is one of the last vestiges of Lake Passaic, a 30 mile
long, 10 mile wide and 200 ft. deep body of water left behind when
the Wisconsin Glacier retreated about 15,000 years ago,
Nearby Hatfield Swamp and the Great Swamp to the south are also
remains of the lake.
Best access is from Troy Meadow Rd. Park at or before the gas
pipeline. If you come from that direction you will likely be
following the ancient bed of Troy Meadow Rd to the cache. According
to an old map I found, Troy Meadow RD once continued through the
meadow and crossed the Whippany RIver on a bridge and ended in East
Hanover. I heard somewhere that the bridge washed away in a flood
many years ago and now the old road bed is a heavily overgrown
embankment through the swamp..
The area where the cache was hidden I'm told is known as "The
Island", likely because it is a high spot and probably of of the
few dry areas in the meadow during wet seasons, I suspect that the
cache itself might be a little off the "island" and in water in wet
seasons, so it is wired to its hiding place.
