Geocache Description:

A FAMOUS CYCLING COURSE

Most people don't realize it, but these trails were once part of a famous cycling training course.  Of course, this was long before the EBMUD acquired the property.

Back then, this area was the most populate sporting destination on the West Coast. Once every year, there was a famous race, called the "Tour de Basso." (That's where the "Tour de France" got its name.) Famous cyclists from all over the world came to participate.  My great great great great grandfather, Basso I, was the founder of the race. He stood at the starting line, and began each race by firing a pistol. I handed out water bottles to the cyclists as they came around "Death Alley" bend. I was able to find a rare shapshot of the very first winner--shown below.

Anyway, we had to be very careful about the conditions of the course, but sometimes careless riders would go over the edge.  Of course, we tried to rescue them, but some of them we never did find again. They might still be down there for all we know.

One day, Basso I put out a funny container. I don't know what it was.  Can you help me find it?

NOTE: When hiking on EBMUD property, you need to get a special pass. This is simple to do, and cheap. You can do this online and get a pass for just a day, or longer.
