Geocache Description:

The New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) is hosting a Summer Geo-Challenge in 12 NEFF-owned Community Forests throughout New England. NEFF is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation and sustainable management northeastern forestlands. It is our pleasure to share these forests with fellow outdoor enthusiasts! The Bearcamp cache is a two mile round trip on level wide path that will bring you along the Bearcamp River and out to a beautiful view of Ossipee Lake.

The Grand Prize Winner of the 2006 Geo-challenge is Laurie Maldari of Massachusetts. Congratulations to Laurie and thanks to everyone who participated. We look forward to next year's event!

The Bearcamp Forest Cache:

Parking is off of RT 16, if traveling north turn right onto Jewel Hill Rd, left if coming south. Parking for 2-3 cars at 43 47.240 -071 10.280.

When leaving the parking area for the cache, follow the main path. When you get to 43 47.463 -071 10.165 there will be a small footpath that runs off to the east. Feel free to explore your way down this path. It will bring you down to a nice view of Patch Pond. The path leads out of the property to Patch Pond Way. You will have to do a U-turn and head back the way you came to get back to the parking area. When following the main path you will have the opportunity to walk along the sandy riverbed if the water level allows. When you come upon an old platform near the riverbank you will be close to the prize, but don’t be distracted, head east for another 500ft and you will have a great view of Ossipee Lake.

Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell E. Foster donated Bearcamp Woodlands to NEFF in 1977. The Bearcamp acres were once hayed, but returned to woodland when Lake Ossipee was dammed. Land and forest types are very diverse on this parcel. Half of the parcel is composed of wetlands, represented by (spruce) bogs, beaver ponds, open water in the pond and river, marshes with grasses and forested wetlands. Forest cover includes the white pine type, pitch pine/scrub oak in the Ossipee sand plains habitat, floodplain habitat with silver maple, and mixed oak-pine and birch forest habitat.

The geology of the river environment is illustrated by the oxbows. This is one of the largest undeveloped sections of the highly developed Ossipee lake frontage. It is now home for black bear, moose, muskrat, and otter. Bearcamp borders the unspoiled Bearcamp River, which is superb for canoeing.

Enjoy the hunt!

NEFF is grateful to all the wonderful volunteers throughout New England who placed these caches and made the Summer Geo-Challenge possible. Thank you “Sharpee” for placing and care taking this cache in our Bearcamp Woodlands!!!
