Geocache Description:

It is Sept. 21, 1876 just 2 weeks after the bank raid in Northfield. Four members of the Jesse James gang were captured, eight miles west of Madelia. A young seventeen year old Oscar Sorbel went to town to tell the sheriff the outlaws were out at their farm. At this time over 200 men were riding across the countryside that day looking for the gang. A few of the posse members caught up with the outlaws on the Watonwan River. Where a shootout lasting less than 3 minutes broke out between the gang and the posse. With one of the James gang being killed named Charles Pitt. Two other gang members were wounded multiple times while another member was shot in the elbow in the Northfield raid and unable to shoot. The 3 Younger brother gang members were taken to the town of Madelia to be doctored and jailed. Saturday morning they were taken by train to Faribault, in Rice County to await trial they were sentenced to life in Stillwater prison. While this was going on the James brothers were last spotted on the Dakota border. The brothers went on to gather new gang members and continue robbing until Jesse's death. Frank James eventually turned himself in to authorities and became a family man.
