A Short Hike Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

PaukenAC: This one had a really good run. It was placed as a difficult bushwack, then firewire clearing made it much easier to find. Originally it was an ammocan but that was muggled. A replacement container had many finds. Now, with good evidence that it is missing, it is time to clear the area so a new cache can be placed. Team OPJim, the original owner of the cache, wishes to express appreciation to all who visited.

Geocache Description:

An regular sized container hidden very close to an juniper tree.

A Short Hike is located just off of the Houston Trail, part of the Payson Area Trail System. Park at the Houston Mesa Trailhead (see waypoint). When the trail splits after 200 feet, go right (southeast). Alternately, you can come from the west via the Horse Camp Access. Stay on the trail until you reach the trail branch (waypoint below), then leave the Houston Trail by taking the ATV trail that heads east. Once you are withing 250 feet of the cache, you will need to bushwhack north to the cache site.

As I surveyed the area, I saw numerous elk sign, which brought to mind an archery hunter sitting in a tree stand waiting for an elk to come close enough for a shot.

This is my favorite type of cache to hide: climb to the top of a hill or mountain where you can see for miles in several directions. Be sure to take a look at the great views that are available to the east.
East

Similar views of the Granite Dells are to the southeast.
Southeast
If you look to the northeast, you can see the Mogollon Rim.

This cache requires a small amount of crawling through the brush. I recommend good boots, long pants, and a tetanus shot. This cache is subject to Mogollon Shift.
