Geocache Description:

Into the Methoni Castle. Tuesday closed. Opening hours: Nov-Mar 8:30-15:30, Apr-Aug 8:00-20:00, Sept-Oct 8:00-Sunset). Admittance fee 2 euros.

You can't say to have visited Peloponnese if you have not visited Methoni and its Castle. The site is fascinating: you can spend hours climbing walls, exploring dark passages (bring a torch with you!), entering the Bourtzi tower, ...

Occupied by Venetian for the first time in 1125, then was taken by Sultan Bayazet in 1500, when he invaded the Peloponnese. In 1686 Venetians come back again and in 1715 begun the second Turk occupation.

Maritime routes in the Mediterranean closely followed the coastline, this made of Methoni a strategic point in the route from the Ionian to the Aegean Sea and more in general in the route from Italy to the eastern Mediterranean. For this reason Methoni and the nearby fortress of Coroni were called the "eyes of Venice".

The cache is a frappé (iced coffee) container, used by greek people to bring around their home-made frappes. We put this cache when we was traveling on motorbike for the holidays, we were not prepared at all: we had not the standard Geocache disclaimer printout, we had not goodies to put inside. Nothing.

But the place worth a cache, absolutely! We purchased the container in a local market and a "komboloi" for trading in a souvenir shop (a komboloi is the famous Greek worry beads, see Wikipedia or this page). I had also a little notepad that was promoted as the logbook.

Small note on cache maintenance: I arranged with "tetras61" who agreed to be the "cache guardian" of Methoni Castle. Thanks!
