Geocache Description:

NOTE: Serious geocachers carry their own tools. There may or may not be a pen in the cache!

This is one of a series of caches that commemorate the fifteen Division 1-A football national championships* won by The University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Each cache represents one of the NC wins and includes a brief story about the team. Links to the other hides in this series can be found in the bookmark listing to the right.

*There is a lot of debate among fans, foes, and interested observers on the real number. The actual number lies between 10 and 20. See (visit link) if you are a glutton for punishment...At any rate, 15 is what is claimed by the University, so 15 caches. Deal with it.

This cache commemorates the 1964 Alabama Crimson Tide team. The 1964 Tide, coached by Paul 'Bear' Bryant and led by Joe Namath at QB, completed the regular season 10-0-0 and winning the SEC championship. Alabama was then invited to play the Texas Longhorns in the January 1, 1965 Orange Bowl, losing 21-17 to finish the season 10-1-0. At the time, final polls were released before bowl games were played and the 1964 Alabama football team was selected national champions by the AP and Coaches Polls in favor of undefeated Arkansas. As a direct result of this controversy, the AP Poll decided to wait until after the bowl games to select their champion in the 1965 season.
