The
Pomahaka River
The Pomohaka (The Pommy) is a
major tributary of the Clutha River and a famous fishery in its own
right. It is a long river, which starts out as a classic high
country stream holding some large brown trout and sea salmon.
If your luck is with you, you might see some of these gliding past
below the bridge.
Referred to ,locally, as the Pommy and sounding like a term
of endearment it is located in South and West Otago in New
Zealand's South Island, flowing south for 80 kilometres from the
Old Man Range of mountains to join the Clutha just north of
Balclutha. Along its path it passes the Blue Mountains and the
forestry town of Tapanui in the area known locally as West
Otago.
For a short part of its length, the river forms the boundary
between Otago and Southland regions.
For almost a hundred years, Tapanui was serviced by the Tapanui Branch
railway line, which stopped 1km outside of the town before carrying
on to Kelso and then Heriot. This line was formally opened in late
1880 and closed after being damaged by severe flooding in the
region in October 1978.
The cache container is a 200ml blue Systema KlipIt with a logbook,
pencil & sharpener and a stash note.
