Inleiding:
Natte natuur terug in NP Zuid-Kennemerland
Het stopzetten van de drinkwaterwinning in het nationaal park Zuid-Kennemerland heeft een positief effect gehad op de natuur. In driekwart van de duinvalleien groeien weer vochtminnende planten, en de door omwonenden gevreesde grondwateroverlast aan de duinrand is uitgebleven. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van het waterleidingbedrijf PWN. Om de gevolgen van het stopzetten van de waterwinning goed te kunnen volgen, is de grondwaterstand in de afgelopen jaren op tientallen plaatsen gemeten. Uit de onderzoeksgegevens blijkt dat de grondwaterstand in de duinen één tot enkele meters is gestegen. Als gevolg daarvan bloeien parnassia, duizendguldenkruid en orchideeën weer in de Kennemerduinen

De Meters
Om de stand van het grondwater te meten, staan verspreid over Nederland duizenden onopvallende kunststof peilbuizen. Helaas kun je als voorbijgaande fietser of wandelaar daar niet aan zien hoe het met het grondwater gaat. Op een aantal plekken in Nederland kan dat nu wel. Hier zijn grondwatermeters geplaatst waarop iedereen kan af lezen wat de stand van de grondwater is.
Hoe werkt een grondwatermeter?
Een grondwatermeter bestaat uit een stalen buis die zich voor een paar meter onder de grond bevindt. Via gaten onder in de buis komt het grondwater in de buis te staan. Op dit water drijft een lange koker die boven de grond te zien is en de stand van het grondwater aangeeft.
De stand van het grondwater wordt altijd aangegeven vanaf het maaiveld. Het maaiveld is het grensvlak tussen bodem en lucht (atmosfeer).
Staat het grondwater op de hoogte van het maaiveld, dan vult de koker de hele buis. De koker staat dan bij het streepje 0. Zakt het water daarna bijvoorbeeld 20 cm dan staat het grondwater 20 cm onder het maaiveld. Dit wordt op de buis aangegeven als -20.
Werking van de grondwatermeters.
De schaalverdeling is in 3 kleuren aangegeven. Deze kleuren geven aan of de waterstand op peil is, te laag of veel te laag. In sommige gevallen wordt ook aangegeven of de waterstand te hoog is. Dit gebeurt bijvoorbeeld wanneer het natuurgebied grenst aan landbouwgebied. Voor landbouwgebied moet de grondwaterstand lager zijn dan voor natuur, daarom is de gewenste stand een compromis.
Het ontwerp
De grondwatermeters zijn ontworpen door de Groningse kunstenaar Martin Borchert. De buis is van roestvrij staal, de palissade van larixhout. Bij elke grondwatermeter staan 2 teksborden. Op het linkerbord staat bij elke meter dezelfde tekst. Deze legt uit wat grondwater en wat verdroging is. Het rechterbord heeft betrekking op het gebied waar de grondwatermeter staat.

Wet nature back in NP Zuid Kennemerland
The stopping of water-extraction in ‘nationaal park Zuid Kennemerland’ has had a positive effect on nature. In the dune valley’s vegetation that is doing well on wet soil has returned and the increasing of the groundwater level hasn’t caused the expected problems in the urban areas that are close to the dunes. These are the conclusions of a study that is conducted by the water supply company PWN. To get a good view about the impact after the stopping of the water-extraction, the groundwater level has been measured the previous years in dozens of places. From the research data it becomes clear that the groundwater level has increased one meter up to some meters. As a consequence ‘Parnassia’, ‘Duizendguldenkruid’ and orchids can be found again in ‘de Kennermerduinen’.

Measuring the groundwater level
For measuring the groundwater level, thousands of plastic measuring tubes are inconspicuously placed all over the Netherlands. Unfortunately, as a by passer you can’t see what is going on with the groundwater level. However in a number of spots it has recently made possible to read the level of the ground water.
How does it work?
A groundwater meter exists of a steel tube which is placed a couple of meter under the ground. The steel tube has tiny holes where ground water is pouring through. A long inner tube is floating on the water that gets in inside the tube. You can see the inner tube en outer tube above the ground and read the groundwater level on the indicators. The level of the groundwater is always indicated as from the ‘maaiveld’. The ‘maaiveld’ is the border area between the ground and air (atmosphere). When the groundwater level is on the altitude of the “maaiveld”, then the inner tube fills the complete tube. The inner tube stands then at the hyphen 0. When the ground water level decreases for example 20 cm then the groundwater level is 20 cm under the “maaiveld”. This is indicated on the tube as -20.
Working of the groundwater measuring tubes.
The scale of the measuring tubes is in 3 colors. The colors indicate if the groundwater level is normal, low or too low in some case is shows if the level is too high. This is sometimes the case when nature area and agriculture area are bordered. The level of the groundwater for agriculture area should be lower than for nature areas. The groundwater level will have in that case a compromised level.
The design
The groundwater measuring equipment has been designed by the artist Martin Borchert. The tube is of stainless steel, the palisade of wood. There are 2 signs placed at each measuring location. On the left is a sign that contains for each measuring location the same text. This text explains groundwater level and tells about dry out. The right sign gives local information about the area where the groundwater measuring location is located.

Door een parkeerkaart te kopen draagt u bij in de kosten voor natuurbeheer. De tarieven zijn: 1e half uur gratis;daarna € 2,00 tot max. 10,00. |
