Geocache Description:

You are looking for a 30 cal ammo can at the final. Along the way you will be looking for some numbers and coordinates, to get you to the final.

LSP Permit #032

There may be a gate fee to enter the Park depending on the time of year that you visit there. At this time there is no fee to enter the Park via the Portageville entrance. This will take you close to a parking area where you only need to hike .24 to arrive at the first leg.

It was a little over 100 years ago in a removed area of Letchworth Park where a mysterious murder took place. An Indian Doctor named Alfred Silverheels lived in the area not too far from the council grounds. Today all that remains of this time is an old stone foundation and the ramp to the “dry bridge” to remind us of those days. This is a true story of an incident that happened and was the talk of the town then but now it has been lost to the ages and is known by very few people.

It seems that a Mr. Silverheels, who was between 50 -60 years old at the time, was staying at the James Jamieson home and was taking a fancy to Mr. Jamieson’s teenage daughter. This little house is located in the area above the council grounds known as the “dry bridge”, where the old dirt road crossed the Erie Railroad tracks by use of a large iron bridge with a wooden Deck. Mr. Jamieson was not too fond of this acquaintance and one day while they were out hunting together, he warned Alfred Silverheels to stay away from his daughter unless he planned on marrying her. Finally Mr. Jamieson decided to take matters into his own hands. One day as Alfred Silverheels was coming down the stairway in the Jamieson house he was met by Mr. Jamieson who produced a gun and shot him dead. He was taken a ways off to a berry patch and then buried in a field where Mr. Jamieson pulled a stone boat back and forth over the ground to hide the grave. The Jamieson family was sworn to secrecy and no one seemed to miss poor Alfred. That is until one day about a month later Alfred Silverheels brother inquired about his whereabouts as he had not heard from him in some time, and he had heard a rumor about the death of his brother.

Now it was a known fact among the people of the area that this murder had taken place but the people all felt that justice had been served and tried to forget this unfortunate event. The sheriff was notified by Mister Silverheels brother that he thought his brother Alfred was missing so the Sheriff went to the Jamieson house and apprehended Mr. Jamieson who confessed to the whole thing and even told where the body was buried. While Mister Jamieson was being held for murder and was serving a ten year sentence, a petition was produced and was circulated around the area to free Mr. Jamieson from this crime. It was signed by many prominent people, including the judge, so the case was reconsidered and Mr. Jamieson was given a lighter sentence due to the support he received from the community. He ended up serving only 3 - 5 years and learned to read and write while he was in prison.

OK, now about the cache, It is important to read the cache sheet carefully because there is some information on the page that is crucial to being able to find and open the cache. At the posted coordinates you need to look for a 2 digit number written in silver marker. Once you find this number then proceed to, N42.35.268 W078.02.922. Be sure to keep track of the number you found because you will need it at the final. At the next leg you are looking for a camouflaged waterproof matchstick container. You need to find the next 2 digit number and coordinates for the third leg at this location.

****The third leg has changed and what you are looking for is a set of coordinates written in silver paint pen, on a black rectangular piece of plastic that is hidden about knee level. You do not have to look in the rocks or in the foundation. I am giving you the third 2 digit number that you need, it is 22.****

Now you are on your way to the final and make sure that you keep the 2 digit numbers arranged in the order that you found them. Please make a good effort to re-hide each leg as good as or better than you found them.

An interesting fact about the 3rd leg location, this leg is hidden at the site of the actual foundation of the James Jamieson house where the murder of Alfred Silverheels took place. If you look toward the railroad tracks you can spot the old ramp to the old iron bridge that used to cross the railroad tracks. There is also an orienteering marker for the GPS-O course that is set up in the South end of Letchworth Park.

The final is a 30 cal ammo can, with some swag for the kids and adults, and also a couple of really nice prizes for first and second to find. I got a really nice arrowhead away from Paleoman52 and I put it in the cache, and I have a signed Mr. Scribbles art piece on a flint flake too. Please make an extra effort to hide this can very well before you leave.

I wish to thank Mr. Roland Beck for reviewing and approving the placement of this cache in Letchworth Park.
