The Hozoji Temple is affiliated with the Seiganji Temple, in the Seizan-Fukakusa school of Jodo Buddism. It was founded by Nyorin in Mtonishi-Mibu village in 1269. In 1591, it was relocated to Ura-Teramachi, behind Teramachi, as part of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's redevelopment of the temple district. The present main hall dates from 1932.
The Hozoji was the parish temple of the 18th-century painter, Ito Jakuchu, so he erected gravestones of his parents here in 1751 and for his young brother, Sojaku, in 1765.
