Letters from the heart USPS 99501 Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

blazingpathways: Many of the little blue boxes have been decommissioned and the links are difficult to find deep in the Postal Museum archives. Thanks to everyone who worked on solving the Letters from the Heart series through the years. I will pick up the container in the next couple of weeks.

Geocache Description:

The coordinates listed lead you to a little blue USPS box - there is no physical cache at the starting location. Rather, the starting location has an answer to one of the questions that will bring you to the final. GEOCHECKER ADDED.

COORDINATES OF THE FINAL WERE UPDATED ON 2/25/08 and the puzzle was changed to reflect the updated coordinates.
The puzzle was changed 10/15/16 with a new question for gg.

This is the first in a series of caches dedicated to the ever faithful little blue boxes of the US Postal Service. How they seem to blend into my environment until I need one.

The theme for this puzzle is the Pony Express.

The final is located at:

N 61° aa.bcc W 149° de.fgg

where:
aa = add 1 to the age of the youngest Pony Express rider.

b = The Transcontinental Telegraph reached Salt Lake City and the official closing of the Pony Express was this many days later.

cc = add 3 to the number of pounds of mail the mochila could hold.

d = the first digit in the last weekday mail pick up time at the starting coordinates

e = 0.

f= subtract 2 from the average mph the horses traveled.

gg= the last two digits of the answer you get when you subtract 4 from the age at which Bronco Charlie died.

Here are some links to visit.

At the Pony Express National Museum Site, use the dropdown on the ABOUT tab to find the answer to gg.

I needed to stop horsing around or this cache was never going to get off the ground. Bring a writing utensil.
