Geocache Description:

Leasowe Lighthouse was built by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board and is the oldest brick built lighthouse in Britain. It is 101 feet tall with 130 steps leaving up through the 7 levels. Its light was lit for the last time on July 14th 1908. This was one of four lighthouses on the North Wirral coast.

Originally this was the “upper light” with a “lower light” on the actual shoreline. Ships masters simply lined up the two light which directed their vessel into the entrance of the Rock Channel and on to the port of Liverpool. Unfortunately the lower light suffered from erosion and eventually collapsed. In 1871 a new “Upper light” was built three miles away on Bidston Hill (it is still there today) and Leasowe lighthouse then became the new “lower light”.

The last keeper of the lighthouse was a Mrs Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Williams were formerly keepers of the Great Orme Lighthouse in Llandudno and they moved to Leasowe. Soon afterwards Mr. Williams was taken ill and his wife took over the keepers duties. She performed them so well that on his death a year later, the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board appointed her as the new keeper. They also allowed her to employ one of her thirteen children, a daughter, as an assistant. When the building ceased to function as a lighthouse Mrs. Williams moved into a cottage but she kept the lighthouse and ran it as a very popular teahouse during summer months.

Nowadays, the lighthouse houses a Visitor Centre on the ground floor, and a rangers office on one of the higher floors. The lighthouse is open to the public (with visits to the top for a small fee) between 1pm and 4pm on the first Sunday of each month in winter, and the first and third Sundays in Summer.

To find the cache you need to locate the tablet above the lighthouses door (at the listed co-ordinates) that bears an inscription for the then mayor of Liverpool, William Gregson. On the tablet, as well as his initials - MWG is a date (ABCD). The cache can be found a short distance away at
N 53 24.(A+B)(D-A)(A+B) W 003 07.(B-A)(C-A)(B-C).
Please check for muggles before and during searching, and again when you replace the cache as this is a very popular area. Also ensure the cache is well out of sight when you replace it so passers-by will not see it.

Leasowe Lighthouse also has a webcam cache ( GCMZ57 ). There are not many webcam caches remaining in the UK, so be sure to get that one whilst at the lighthouse.
