Geocache Description:

Seabranch Preserve State Park is located just south of Port Salerno, on Hwy A1A. This preserve has several different natural communities in a relatively short distance. In less than one mile, one can see rare sand pine scrub, scrubby flatwoods, a baygall community, and a mangrove swamp. Hikers can explore these natural communities over five miles of trails. Florida Scrub Jay and Pileated Woodpecker are among the many bird species found here.

While I was placing this cache there were a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers within 100 feet, hence the cache name. There is lots of suitable nesting and feeding habitat nearby, so they are likely to remain in the area. Keep an eye out for them while you're here.

The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest North American woodpecker, (assuming that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is extinct). It is common throughout the eastern USA and all of Canada, but despite it's size ("crow like"), it is usually not noticed. Most often, it is detected by either it's loud ringing call or hammer-like blows, as it digs in trees for insects. For more information about this impressive bird, click here
