Geocache Description:

I enjoyed the mostly defunct IWH (It Was Here) series immensely and so decided to launch my own series of caches that walk through the Beckley area’s history. Thus was born the ALTA (A Long Time Ago) series.

More caches will be added to this series as I think of them and as time allows. Hope you enjoy them!

A generic guardrail cache. :-(

Today the WV Turnpike is part of the Eisenhower Interstate System with both interstates 77 and 64 running through the Beckley area. However, many locals may remember when the turnpike was a two-lane road. Construction began in 1952, many years before the interstate system was born. It was only in 1986 that the entire length of the Turnpike, which stretches from Princeton, WV, to Charleston, WV, was upgraded to interstate standards.

Three service areas can be found along the turnpike: the Morton area (accessible only northbound), the Bluestone area (accessible only to those traveling south), and the Beckley area (accessible for both north- and south-bound travelers). The service areas were originally called Glass Houses. Why? I have no idea! It was always a treat, though, to get to go to the Beckley Glass House. Today this service area houses the normal variety of service area fast food eateries.
