Karst Camo (Waikato) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Bobo & Jojo: This cache has been challenging for many people. Early on it was a mushroom/toadstool that was tucked in next to a fern under a wee overhang. We put out many other similar looking mushrooms to help the trickery and get people used to seeing the mushrooms regardless of the time of year. Regardless of the outcome of the hunt people got to experiance a nice little patch of karst. Unfortunatly I stopped visiting Waitomo and wasn't able to look after the cache, a huge thanks to Kevin who has helped to look after this cache and of course thank you to all the people who searched and enjoyed this cache over the years.

Geocache Description:

A cache to celebrate the gorgeous karst landscape around Waitomo. Access is along a well-maintained pathway through a lovely reserve, but some stairs, and the final hiding place, have increased the terrain rating slightly.

Limestone is the remnants of dead sea animals, packed together under great pressure. Limestone is mostly made up of calcium carbonate, which dissolves in water, but not very easily -- unless the water is acidic.

As it happens, much of the water found in nature is (slightly) acidic. Rainfall picks up small amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and larger amounts when it hits the ground and mixes with decaying matter in the soil, forming carbonic acid.

Water has run across Waitomo's limestone surfaces and gradually eroded it, leaving bizarre and spectacular formations in its wake, some above ground and some below. As you wander around GZ, take a moment to imagine the years of running water that have created it.

You should follow the track from the car park (S38 15.698 E175 06.357) towards the lookout. GPS cover is erratic at GZ, but your reading should place you within 5m of a very oddly placed white rock (unfortunatly this sometime goes missing), which is within a few meters of the actual cache.

Please note that within 20m of GZ there is a bait station and several high climbs and holes, none of which are involved in the cache.

This cache was previously owned by JK180 who has now become Jojo in the team Bobo and Jojo
