Whiddon Down, which has the nearby exit on the A30 named after it, is a small Village falling just within both the administrative area of West Devon and Dartmoor National Park. The area was largely populated by scattered hamlets and farms from the Saxon period. This diffuse community grew very quickly from the 18th century with the turn-piking of the south-north road. The Post Inn is a 15th century crossroad dwelling that was converted to a coaching inn and post point. Population growth of Whiddon Down continued to grow throughout much of the 19th century until it was sufficient for the establishment of a primary school and the Methodist church.
The Methodist church at Whiddon Down serves an important function as the only place of worship for three miles, and brings a christian presence within the rural area and community. Despite this numbers regularly attending worship tends to be small, but services at important dates in the christian calendar, such as Christmas Carol, Harvest Festival and Good Friday, normally draw bolstered numbers from a wider area.
