Geocache Description:

One of a series of caches placed at old quarries. This is an OPEN SOURCE or COMMUNITY series: Feel free to take the base of the name and create new caches in the series.

"One of the oldest quarries in the county was opened in northwest (sic) Raleigh along a small tributary of the Southeast Prong of Beaverdam Creek just south of the west end of Lewis Circle. At least three irregular openings have been worked to depths of 15 to 20 feet. The rock is gray, fine-grained, lineated, microcline-quartz gneiss. Much of it is quartzitic; mica is a minor in amount. Foliation trends N. 10-15 degrees E. and dips 75 degrees east; lineation plunges 5 degrees south-southwest. The strong lineation and weak planar structure permits the rock to be split readily into prismatic blocks rather than tabular slabs. Sparse nearly vertical joints striking N. 80 degrees W. facilitate removal of stone. Lewis(1893. p.78) reports that the trim and sills for Christ Church(built in 1848)was said to have come from here; however, the church walls, not the trim, are of this variety of stone. The quarry was operated at intervals for many years but probably not since the 19th century. Part of this quarry has been transformed into a private rock garden."

What a cool backyard! Thought I would add that you and I own and paid for that fence that protects a wonderful yard and all of us as well.
