Geocache Description:

The Kennet and Avon Canal is 87 miles long, starting from Bristol following the course of the River Avon before the canal links it to the River Kennet at Newbury, and from there to Reading on the River Thames. The waterway incorporates 105 locks.

The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 but gradually fell into disuse after the opening of the Great Western Railway. In the latter half of the 20th century the canal was restored in stages, largely by volunteers. After much restoration work, it was fully reopened in 1990. The Kennet and Avon Canal has been developed as a popular heritage tourism destination for boating, canoeing, fishing, walking and cycling, and is also important for wildlife conservation.

Placed with the kind permission of the Canal and River Trust.

This small stretch of the canal runs from Southcote Lock, linking the Holybrook river to the canal through to the Cunning Man pub – once said to be a haven for smugglers but today a lovely pub with garden.

If you follow the canal path west towards Reading, you will also find more caches left by our good geobuddies: beagles_candd.  This is a favourite walk for our litlle pack of beagles.

This cache is a small camo box just off the main pathway, suitable for trackables.
