Geocache Description:

This geocache forms part of our Downs Link series as well as the extensive Village Sign series .

About Village Sign Caches

This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!

More information and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website - https://www.villagesignseries.co.uk

Partridge Green VS

Downs Link- Garden Centre? is one of our Downs Link series of caches created particularly with cycling in mind. Within its Description is a hyperlink to our Downs Link Bookmark List which contains all our caches on the Downs Link from St Martha's Hill (near Guildford) to Bramber in West Sussex plus all known caches set by other owners along the Downs Link trail. This list can be used to generate a Pocket Query to download to a GPSr or phone app. It also has details of many parking locations along the length of the Downs Link, one of which is Little Oak Free Parking at Partridge Green Village Hall accessible via Village Hall Lane off the High Street, plus another link to a WSCC Downs Link website with useful information a.o. pertainaining to closures.

Partridge Green is a village in the Horsham District of West Sussex. It lies 8.8.miles (18 km) south of the town of Horsham and 2.5 miles (4 km) north-west of Henfield, in the parish of West Grinstead.

Partridge Green takes its name from a family called Partrych who were registered in the area in 1332. The name Partrych comes from the medieval word Petriche, meaning a snarer of partridges.

The village shares its origins with Jonesfield, a medieval settlement in this area. The name Jolesfield is perpetuated in that of a small common of agricultural interest and a small street off the B2135. Furthermore, the Church of England primary school in Littleworth Lane, opened in 1873, also bears the name of that settlement.

The village started to develop in 1861 with the arrival of the Horsham to Shoreham railway line (known as the Steyning Line) and the building of Partridge Green railway station.

The settlement in what today is Partridge Green originated around the road junction of the B2135 and B2116 with several houses (in 1840 there were around six houses) and an inn that was one of the meeting places for the West Grinstead Hundred court between 1786 and 1802.

With the arrival of the railway, that inn was replaced with a new building called the Station Inn (later Station Hotel). After the closure of the railway in 1966 it was renamed and, in 2011, it was taken over by a local brewery.

If you are looking for this cache as part of a longer walk, cycle ride or geocaching expedition along the Downs Link, the village of Partridge Green, its sign and refreshments are easily accessible, and a short distance, from the bridleway. In fact, the Downs Link is somewhat disrupted by the B2135 at this point.

The cache is not at the published coordinates. First, however, you must find your way to the published coordinates which will take you to the village sign. Once at the sign,  cast your eyes about and you will eventually see signs pointing to 2 trading estates adjacent to another sign with a road name on it.

Note the number of letters in the names of the trading estates and the road (do not include the word "road").

Let:

A = the number of letters in the road sign

B = the number of letters in the shorter trading estate name

C = the number of letters in the longer trading estate name

The cache can be found at: N 50° 57.A((AxB) + (AxC))  W 000° 18.ACA

Have Fun :)

We would like to thank The Adamss for alerting us to their archiving of the original Partridge Green Village Sign cache so we could step in and replace it and to rob77 for graciously permitting us to take this opportunity up when he had himself noted it and made preparations for placing a cache in this location.

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do. I would ask that you request a number for your cache first by filling in the new request form on the Village Sign Series website https://www.villagesignseries.co.uk so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
