Several Central Texans took off for East Texas to attend
"Floatin' Down the Crick", an event that included a long paddle
down Village Creek and based in the State Park by that name. While
at the put-in point and waiting for the canoe rental people, we
discovered a tragedy ... five homeless and motherless puppies who
had apparently been dumped there. Their mother was lying dead on
the bridge 25 feet above.
A wellspring of compassion rose up in our ranks, and all 5
puppies ended up being removed from this place, even one who had
appeared to be very ill on Saturday, but who, with a little TLC,
was much, much better by Sunday! One of the little mutts (they look
like black labs, but who knows their bloodlines??) looked
especially beseechingly into Wanakenagirl's eyes, and Nancy was
done for. "Lucky," as she was eventually named, floated down the
creek in Nancy's kayak, sleeping when she wasn't caching or being
fawned over. One trip to Target and one bath later, she seemed to
be quite a fetching little pup. She was on her way to being a
beloved pet.
"I'm a LUCKY dog!"
Anyway, the story isn't over yet, because we're not even to her
eventual home, but she already knows the word "micro." She helped
us hide a micro in a westbound rest area on IH 10 so you could come
here and enjoy the surroundings as she did. This should give you a
nice stretch while you're stopped, but keep an eye out for the fire
ants! Container is a camo-taped soda tube (bigger than a match
holder and smaller than a cigar tube). Please recap snugly! Bring
