Located north of a major highway, you can easily drive near to this cache on most summer days. This is one of the smallest caches I have ever placed, but don't let that deter you ! ! !
Having almost a year under the belt GeoCachin' now, we figured it was about time to take some of the things we've (Snyder Bear Team) saw and learned and experienced over the past year, and employ these towards a few cache sites local to us.
First off, we most generally found that most caches are either at the top of the highest points or at the lowest level of a wet area - either that or it drew attention to something mystical or beautiful that caused the placer to be in that area in the first place. So we set off to offset this (huh?) just a bit with some easy caches in the area that draws attention to only natural areas within our lovely Black River State Forest. This cache is easily reached by vehicle, yet it will take you off the beaten trail enough to see some of the State forest land conservation practices. Also, this cache doesn't really have anything significant or attractive to look at initially, unless you enjoy nature in progress. Located within this area and along the walk to the flowage area (part of a flowage restoration area), you will see an abundance of flora and fauna. Don't forget your binoculars and cameras - we have an abundance of Lupine in the area, that draws alot of Karner Blue Butterflys as well. This part of the Forest really has a diversity of wildlife ranging from deer, bear, turkey, small game, and a wide variety of waterfowl as well, that will impress the most experienced of bird watchers.
One thing to note: This flowage was actually named after one of the local Native American families who now use the Funmaker name. Of course, in recent times - during the last 200 years, most of this area that is now State Forest was a thriving community of European loggers and farmers as well, and so today you'll also find that many of the flowage names reflect these groups of individuals as well. During the depression and afterwards, most of the marginal farmland was given up to the state, as farmers were forced to move to better locations to practice their trade - the area just wasn't conducive to the European life style that was brought to this area early on in Wisconsin State’s history. Be that as it may, this area returned back to most of its natural settings, and today you have a State Forest and all if it’s diversity in its place. In the coming months, We’ll likely be doing some research on the various flowages and update the cache site pages, but we wanted to get them going this summer as well, SO HERE WE GO THEN . . .
One thing I can assure you on your visit to this flowage cache - you stand the chance of running into an abundance of mosquito. So take stock in your supply of insect repellent, and have fun visiting our neck of the woods…
