There's nothing more complicated that the laws that protect intellectual property from non-owner infringement. Reading the legal case judgments of lawsuits brought against individuals or companies for copyright infringement can give you a sense of just how complicated copyright law can be, such as I did to create the original version of this cache.
To illustrate how far copyright law and interpretation extends beyond the simple protection of a logo being copied or re-used without the creator's permission for commercial gain (i.e., the policies regarding the use of logos in a cache description), I was not allowed to show any logo's for this puzzle. In fact, I had to re-create it based entirely on the first case of infringement, even though the sole purpose of this cache is educational with absolutely no commercial or solicitous content.
Copyright law goes way back. The first ever recorded copyright infringement happened in AD 560 when Scotland's best know saint, St. Columba, was exiled to the island of Iona after being convicted of copyright infringement.
During a visit by the Abbot of Clonard, the Saint was shown a copy of a new Latin biblical manuscript which the Abbot had brought straight from Pope Pelagius. Columba was so desperate to get a copy for his own network of monasteries - because it contained the most authoritative revisions from Rome - that he set about making his own hand-written copy without getting permission from St. Finian. When St. Finian grew suspicious, he sent a spy to Columba's monastery and his deceit was quickly discovered.
A dispute over ownership erupted which finally led to a court case before the High King of Ireland, and in AD560, Columba was found guilty of copyright infringement. He and his royal family disagreed with the ruling, however, and the dispute turned violent between his supporters and the King's, resulting in F000 dead, by some accounts.
So shocking was this conflict between a "Man of God" and the King that a special synod of Bishops and Abbots was convened. In the end they decided the best course of action was to exile Columba from Ireland. So, at the age of AE, he left Ireland with BE followers and settled on the first Island he came to that couldn't be seen from the mainland, Iona. There he established a monastery from which he created a large network of them in outlying regions. He continued to insert secular influence in Ireland and Scotland til his death, and is even responsible for the modern-day coronation ceremony of Scotland.
In AD5DC, he favored a cousin, Aidan, to become the next King of Dalriada, even though he wasn't next in line, and at the coronation, used a stone that he brought from Tara, for the first time in history. All Scotland Kings and Queens have since been crowned upon that stone.
