Geocache Description:

On May 25, 2008, an EF5 tornado tore through the town of Parkersburg, Iowa, destroying the southern third of the town. Over 300 homes and businesses and 6 lives were lost. The massive devastation gained national attention. What escaped most attention was what the tornado did next. The tornado stayed on the ground for 43 miles across northeast Iowa. The next town in its path was the little town of New Hartford. The tornado roared across the northern edge of this town of 650, destroying homes and killing 2 people. Following the tornado, the people of New Hartford did what Iowans do. They worked together to help each other. They quickly got started cleaning up the mess. But Mother Nature wasn’t done with New Hartford yet. Barely two weeks after the tornado, on June 8, 2008, the waters of Beaver Creek slowly and inexorably covered 85% of the town with several feet of water. For many small towns this dual disaster would have marked the end. In fact, several businesses will not return.

This cache celebrates the town of New Hartford and the people who have chosen to rebuild and restart. The cache is an easy find. Once you have signed the log, I invite you to step inside this location. On the south wall you will see a locally made art piece commemorating the disaster. It is a unique piece, crafted from debris left by the storm combined with three oil paintings. It gives you some idea of the power of storms.
