Geocache Description:

The time is right for a summertime picnic! All are welcome to come to Carnwath Farms in Wappinger Falls, NY for the 2009 Mid-Hudson Picnic. Bring your friends, family, or people just interested to know what those crazy people are doing walking around near Route 9 with large cell phones in hand. This event is open to all ages and experience levels. This will be an very informal potluck picnic event. Everyone is asked to bring a food item to share. The official start time for the event will be 11:00 am on August 16th, 2009. People wishing to show up early to help set up or just hike the trails before lunch, are free to do so. There will be plenty of time to hike after lunch as well. This park has some terrific views of the Hudson River and the Gunks to the west. At the time of this posting, there are four caches in the park, but there will be a few more new ones set up for the event. There are many caches locally as well.

I was approached by a local cacher with ties to the Town of Wappingers about setting up this event. The town is trying to stir up more interest in this park which is still in its infancy. They are pleased to help out along with the park supervisor. They will be supplying us with picnic tables, grilles, and the use of the community rooms inside the dormitory building if the weather doesn’t cooperate. So this event is rain or shine. Also, the Sports Museum of Dutchess County will be open and available for use to tour while we are there. All are encouraged to check it out. Through connections with local cachers and the town, we are hoping to have some local media coverage as well to try to get a nice turnout.

Please log a “will attend” post so that we can get together the supplies we’ll need. Also, please post what you will bring and I’ll try to keep the page updated so we get a nice variety of dishes and deserts. I know we’ll have a lot of fun here and can’t wait to see everyone there.

Carnwath Manor was built in 1850 by William Henry Willis. The name was derived from a Manor home in Scotland. After the Civil War, the property was sold to General Barclay in 1870. After passing through family hands with additions of stables and a carriage house, it was sold again. In 1925 it was purchased by the Order of the Brothers of Hermits who built a chapel here in 1950 and a dormitory building in 1958. The Town of Wappinger acquired the land and the six buildings on the property in 2000. The past few years have seen a resurgence in the property for the use as open space and the Sports Museum of Dutchess County. Currently there is a very nice display of county memorabilia, and two ice boats that used to race up and down the Hudson River. There are hiking trails and open fields for all to enjoy.
