This cache has been archived.

Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

A scenic hike along the beautiful Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area ends with a fun cache find. You may park at the DNR Service Center on Highway 28. Use the trail system. Total round trip is about 0.70 miles and 30 minutes, including find. The cache is, of course, slightly off trail, but nothing unusual. Placed with a permit from the Wisconsin DNR to help promote positive eco-tourism. No fee is required to access this cache.

As you hunt for this cache, enjoy the landscapes and wildlife that this Globally Important Bird Area offers. Keep a close eye out for the many types of birds and mammals that live here. You may frequently spot great blue herons, egrets, green herons, and a host of other colorful marsh wildlife. Sunsets and sunrises are especially beautiful here. As always, please respect the environment, and if you see any trash, pick it up.

Some Horicon Marsh facts: Encompassing 32,000 acres, Horicon Marsh is the largest cattail marsh in the U.S. Over the years, more than 290 species have been sighted here and this marsh regularly attracts some of Wisconsin's rarest birds.

The cache is located on public property. The education center is open Monday through Friday, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you can look for the cache basically any time. Feel free to explore the other trails in the area.

* This 3.0L Sterilite container holds pencils, a log book, and a cache note. For the First Time Finder, there are some trade items and special gifts, including a small cash prize! This cache is owned and maintained by The Dodge County Pionier, a weekly newspaper located in Mayville.

The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to Brenda Kelly of the Wisconsin DNR. Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require permission by means of a notification form. Please print out a paper copy of the notification form, fill in all required information, then submit it to the land manager. The DNR Notification form and land manager information can be obtained at: (visit link)

Enjoy!
