Geocache Description:

[CZ]

Tezba zacala v roce 1898 a dul mel 938 zamestnancu. Mechanizace nebyla velka.

Slouzil pouze k cerpani dulnich vod, vetrani a pruchodu lidi a materialu.

Cinnost Dolu Alexander skoncila 31. prosince 1992.

Easy cache, which will show you almoust forgotten cultural landmark in Ostrava. A place, where history will breathe on you. I recomend to hunt this cache only during daylight.

In 1896 digging of a hole began. It was named after count Alexander Palavicini, the president of Northen Ferdinand railroad – the founder of this mine.
Mining tower is made from steel, it’s height is 30,3 meters and it was built in 1897.
Mining began in 1898 and the mine had 938 employes. Mechanisation wasn’t good. Coal down in the mine had been transported to the hole using horses – they were replaced in 1918 by benzol locomotives. In 1926 was the Alexander Mine delegated under a Zarubek Mine and it began to be it’s auxiliary concern. It was used to pump out mine water, to ventilation and as a gateway for people and material, but all coal was mined from the Zarubek mine.
At times when the Alexander mine was self-dependent it mined out more than 5 910 960 tons of coal from it. The mining hole was deepen to 945 meters and ventilation hole to 775,3 meters.
From 1951 there were working and learning miner trainees.
1.1.1979 a part of coal field and it’s equipment from the Alexander mine was delegated to Marsal Jeremenko mine.
The Alexander mine stopped it’s activity in the 31. of December in 1992. Mining hole was buried under in 1993 and the ventilation hole was buried under in 1994.
Sad incident happened in this mine in 1966, when an explosion killed one miner and nine miners were seriously injured.
Both towers of this mine were conserved and now they are marked as historical landmarks of Czech Republic.
It’s good to mention, that mine employess arranged nearby park and they created a small Zoo , which was later moved and expanded to Stromovka in Slezska Ostrava.
