The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) has ten properties open to the public free of charge from dawn to dusk. The KELT Challenge consists of finding at least one of the active caches on their properties then logging the final cache at the above listed coordinates, which is located at the KELT office in Bath. Come upstairs (2nd floor) sign the log and meet the staff. The office is usually open Monday thru Thursday, 9am to 3pm.)
The Kennebec Estuary has long been recognized for its exceptional productivity. Comprised of Merrymeeting Bay, the lower fifteen miles of the Kennebec River and surrounding uplands, it is the largest tidal estuary on the East coast north of the Hudson River, and one of the nation’s most significant coastal resources. Twenty percent of Maine’s tidal marshes are found within the Estuary, representing the largest concentration of salt marshes in the state. Its coastal wetlands, upstream spawning grounds and forested uplands provide critical habitat for five state and federally endangered and threatened species. The Kennebec Estuary is Maine’s largest conservation focus area of statewide significance.
