Geocache Description:

Photobucket

A Redoubt is a fort system usually constructed of a series of
trenches or earthworks that were often fortified with logs,
telegraph wire, stones or fallen trees. It was meant to protect
soldiers outside the main defensive line and can be a permanent
structure or a hastily-constructed temporary fortification.

When Soccer Moms and Dads relax in the bleachers at the Redoubt
Soccer Complex watching their child kick a “worm
burner” towards the “onion sack”, little do they
know that at this very site on which they sit, nearly 150 years
ago, young men, some nearly the same age as their children, were
fighting for their “Just Cause” in the redoubts
surrounding Patrick Cleburn’s Fort., during the many battles
fought in this area during the American Civil War.

Tyner’s Station was the site of a major fortitude, first
held by the “Confederates, then later taken by the Union
forces under the command of “Unconditional Surrender”
Ulysses S. Grant, and William Tecumseh Sherman.

Being a centralized rail station that connected many cities such as
Nashville, Knoxville, Lexington, Atlanta, and Birmingham,
Chattanooga was extremely important in controlling the supply lines
for both armies, and was bitterly contested by both Union and
Confederate forces.

So the next time you visit this wonderful facility, whether to
enjoy the jogging trail or watch a soccer game, just take a moment
to look around and try to visualize how this field looked those
many years ago when our ancestors were playing games that were of a
more serious matter of life and death.

You are looking for a camouflaged lock'n'lock (formerly an ammo can). Take a short stroll
on the walking trail. Resist the urge to bushwhack by not following
the arrow of your GPS. Go on around the bend and go up the cleared
path. It will be a much easier approach.

There is an unregistered Geocoin for FTF.
