Austin Homegrown 13: Buford Tower
This series of caches is a dedication to all the Austin natives.
This cache is located at Buford Tower which was erected in 1930.
This tower was originally built for the Austin Fire Department to
train for "high rise" building fires. Supposedly, the firefighters
would have volunteers jump out of the windows and practice catching
them. The location became impractical as the city grew and
eventually fell into disrepair.
In the late 70s the building was restored and the carillon added.
The restored tower was named in memory of Captain James L. Buford,
an Austin fireman who died in the line of duty on June 17, 1972
while attempting to rescue a 15-year old boy during a Shoal Creek
flood. The carillon is called the Kitchen Memorial Chimes--named
after the original tower's builder and whose widow spearheaded the
restoration.
This is a busy intersection. Cars zip past and people stroll by
frequently. Also watch out for the duck tours! They came by with a
busload of mugglers right as we were placing the cache! If you time
it right you can catch the tower chiming. There is also a very cool
gazebo just south of the tower if you would like to have a picnic
or just check out the great view of the river and city.
The tower seems to give off a lot of bounce so the CLUE IS A
SPOILER if you need it. Bring your own pen. There is just enough
room for geocoins.
Congrads to adaman797 and wjl797! FTF!
