Bóla is a farm and a waterfall situated in Skagafjordur, North Iceland. The cache is placed close to the canyon where you can contemplate up to 5 waterfalls. It is about 500m walk to the cache for 100m elevation. Do not walk to close to the canyon, there are no fences but a lot of lose rocks! ACCESS ON THE LEFT SIDE, (do not cross the bridge)
Bóla is a small farm situated in Skagafjordur, North Iceland. The poet Hjálmar Jónsson, called Bólu Hjálmar, lived at the farm between 1833-1843. Bóla is now deserted but a memorial to Bólu Hjálmar has been erected there in a small grove.
Above the farm Bóla lays a canyon, Bólugil, with beautifully shaped palisades. The sagas tell that it is named after a bondwoman, witch or ogre, who was called Bóla, who was both vicious and unmanageable. She lived in cave in the canyon and stole from the farmers in the neighbourhood. Her story ended when a shepherd drowned her in a pool in the Bóluá river. In the canyon are many beautiful waterfalls and you can see some of them from the road 1.
Turn at the sign on road 1, close the gate behind you as sheep and horses are often in the area. Pass the farm and the memorial and follow the dirt road up to the bridge. Park your car before the bridge and follow the path towards the waterfall.
It will take you 10-20min to cover the 400/500 meters to the cache (~100m elevation). Allow some time to contemplate the waterfalls. Rainbow can often be seen on morning during summer days.
The cache is a film canister containing a mini log-book, and a mini pencil.
