This cache is part of the Historic Route 66 Geocaching Project, a series created by the Historic Route 66 Association of
Arizona, and designated as an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission.
This cache is approved by the Petrified Forest National Park.
Petrified Forest National Park is the only National Park that contains a segment of Route 66. The old telephone poles still mark the route and the car is sitting in the old roadbed. A nearby road trace represents the older National Old Trails Highway. The Beale Wagon Road also passed very close to this spot.
This segment was bypassed by the current I-40 in the late 1950s and the pavement removed shortly afterwards.
Please note this is a take only cache. Please bring a pen and sign the log. You do not need to leave any items in the cache. Please respect the rules and regulations of the park and the resources it was established to protect.
It is possible that snakes may possibly take refuge at this spot so please be wary.
This is a Federal Fee Area and an entrance fee to Petrified Forest National Park (currently $10/ vehicle) is required to access this cache. This cache is only accessible during park operating hours.
