Buckhorn State Park is located on Castle Rock Flowage, a 13,955 acre flowage of the Wisconsin River. Castle Rock Lake is the fourth largest inland lake in Wisconsin. The lake was created between 1949 and 1951 when the Wisconsin River Power Company completed a dam on the Wisconsin River eight miles northeast of Mauston for hydro-electric power production. Flood control and recreational opportunities were also residual benefits the power company envisioned in the dam and flowage development. Prior to the construction of the dam the villages of Werner and Germantown occupied the land that is now Buckhorn State Park and Castle Rock Lake.
This series of caches will give you some history of the area prior to the flooding and creation of the lake.
According to Germantown Cemetery Records, there were three cemeteries in Germantown, one just outside of the town of Germantown and the other two just outside of the village of Werner. The smallest of them was the Burke Farm Cemetery. It was located on the Burke Farm on 19th Avenue South. There were five people buried in it. When Castle Rock Lake was being built, the graves in the cemetery were moved to St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Necedah. The cache is placed near the area of the old Burke Farm and is just off a hiking trail to some backpack campsites. There is a great view of the flowage from here. The cache is not in the campsites, please respect campers if they are occupying the sites.
Parking is available nearby, a short hike to the cache is required. A current Wisconsin State Parks sticker is required to park a vehicle in any part of the park at any time of year. Come prepared for mosquitoes in the summer months!
