Along this trail are the remains of a B-24J Liberator Bomber. In the early morning of 05 May 1944, 2LT Kimble and crew departed Hickam Field on a replacement mission enroute to 5th AF. Six miles after takeoff, failing to make a right turn, they crashed into Pu'u Uau Ridge, Ko'olau Range. All ten aviators perished serving our country. 2LT W R Kimble 2LT C E Mueller S Sgt J J Dowb 2LT W E Somsel Jr SGT J H Means Cpl G L Weiss Cpl M F Campos 2LT M Righthand S Sgt M F Norman Cpl J J Carlucci. On 05 May 2008, the 64th Anniversary of the B-24J Liberator Bomber crash, the Hawaii Aviation Preservation Society dedicated a memorial granite plaque to these Airmen. The memorial granite plaque is located at the beginning of Aiea Trail Loop, which is accessible from 7:00AM-6:45PM. The cache is located as close as possible to the gulch of the actual crash site without encroaching on other caches located on this trail. Actual crash site is two gulches past the cache location if you start the trail at the memorial site. If you decide to take the little steep side trail down to the crash site, PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING FROM WHAT IS LEFT OF THE BOMBER. SHOW THE UTMOST RESEPECT FOR THESE FALLEN AIRMEN.
