Geocache Description:

Abingdon, Iowa was founded by Colonel Thomas McCollough in 1849 on the Fairfield-Hedrick stage coach route. The town is named after the Colonel's home town, Abingdon, VA. In its heyday, Abingdon had been a thriving rural community with expectations of significant growth when the railroads came through. However, none of the railroad companies saw an interest in the town and it slowly diminished into unicorporated cummunity that it is today.

Gobble Park is named after the Gobble family who also settled here and was also from Abingdon, VA. T. W. Gobble brought his family here in 1844 and in 1853 opened the T. W. Gobble and Co. general store. The family and the store eventually moved to Fairfield. Lee Gobble (fourth generation of Gobbles in this area) retired and sold the store in 1985. In 1976 Lee Gobble donated the land that is now Gobble Park to the Jefferson Co. Conservation Board. I placed this cache so that it could be found on Thanksgiving Day by any of the "fed up" cachers in the area but there were no takers. So, I'm changing the name from Gobble Gobble Park to Gobble Park.
