Der Westbahnhof in Wien bildet als Kopfbahnhof den Ausgangspunkt der Westbahn. Der Bahnhof wurde am 15. Dezember 1858 anlässlich der Inbetriebnahme der „k.k. priv. Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn“ von Wien Westbahnhof über Linz Hauptbahnhof nach Linz Südbahnhof feierlich eröffnet. Die derzeitige, unter Denkmalschutz stehende, 1951 eröffnete Bahnhofshalle wurde am 21. Dezember 2010 nach zwei Jahren Renovierung wieder zugänglich. Darunter wurde im Herbst 2011 ein unterirdisches Einkaufszentrum fertiggestellt, das sich BahnhofCity Wien West nennt. Die Halle ist zu beiden Seiten von höheren neuen Gebäuden umgeben, in denen u. a. ein Hotel untergebracht ist. 2012 gewann der Bahnhof die Wahl zum schönsten Bahnhof Österreichs.
Westbahnhof is besides Südbahnhof (south station) the largest Viennese train station and the departure point for trains to Germany, Poland, and beyond to France and Belgium. Via the Speisinger Connector, there is also connection to Hungary, Serbia, and Romania in the east and southeast. As a terminus station, OBB trains to Hungary must presently leave the station backwards and reverse to continue on their journey. The station is also the departure point for regional rail lines into the west of Vienna that are included in the Eastern Regional Traffic Authority and belong in part to the Viennese S-Bahn. With the establishment of the long-planned Hauptbahnhof (main station), the Westbahnhof will lose some of its significance, as international trains, above all those that go on to Eastern Europe, will be routed through a connecting tunnel under the Lainzer Zoo, which is already under construction, directly to the Hauptbahnhof. At this time, a reduction in the station's size is to be expected and concepts for the utilization of the surplus space are already being considered.
