Geocache Description:

The seventh annual Ice Walk
will be held on Saturday March 2, 2013
at the Notre Centre hall in Grande Digue, NB.

If you wish to experience winter caching, this is the event for you.

Check the UPDATE section further down the page on a regular basis for updates on ice conditions, on the weather, on the event and on caches.

YOUR CACHING DAY

Registration will begin at NOTRE CENTRE at 9:00 am. The event will be going on all day so feel free to start later if that suits you better or if you already have many of the caches. Please check in with Ma & Pa before going out on the ice.

You will be able to cross the ice to grab caches on Shediac Island or on Cocagne Island. If you have done those caches, bring your snowshoes anyway, because there will be many other new caches in the woods and on trails in this area. If that is not your kind of caching, then venture out on our country roads to pick up some of the many caches or, you may want to do a bit of urban caching in Shediac or try some puzzles in the Shediac to Bouctouche area.
The following link will get you to THE SIX PREVIOUS ICE WALKS

NOTRE CENTRE / AFTER THE CACHING

We have reserved the hall and the kitchen at NOTRE CENTRE from 9 am to 7 pm. We will have warm comfort food, hot drinks, treats and sweets waiting for everyone. When you get back from walk, come in, relax and enjoy the company of fellow cachers and trade stories of your day. If you dont go out caching, please drop in and join in the fun.

Note for those who wish to bring food: We will have access to the large refrigeration units to keep food fresh all day. We will also have access to the stoves.

CLOTHING, EQUIPMENT AND ICE SAFETY

The walk across the ice to Shediac Island may take 30 minutes from Edgewater and you will not be protected from the elements. The walk across to Cocagne Island will take a bit less time. You will spend a lot of time looking for the many caches on the islands and then you will have that same walk back. You should pace yourself and start back if you feel tired. After all, it is a long walk back.

Please dress for the weather. Layering your clothing is the best method of staying warm. This would include long johns and/or snow pants for your legs. We recommend that you include additional clothing items in your backpack. Extra mitts or hand warmers could be helpful as you will be exposing hands to open caches and signing logs. Because of the length of the walk, you should bring a lunch with you and also bring plenty of liquids. Snow is usually not deep on the ice so snowshoes are often not necessary to get over there. Once you are on the islands, snowshoes are very helpful.

The conditions are always changing but we will keep everyone informed. We never venture out on the ice without being as positive as we can about safety. We base it on the activity on the ice and the weather and we also venture over ourselves before the event. We will cancel if there is any doubt. Every year we wait until the commercial fishermen have been out on the ice with their trucks.

If heading to Shediac Island, cross to the North side or to the west side. On the island, travel from the North to the South along the trail on the West side of the Island. When you have done the caches on the South, return the way you came. DO NOT GO ON THE ICE ON THE SOUTH AND EAST SIDE OF THE ISLAND.

GETTING TO THE ISLANDS

The shortest trip across to Shediac Island is from roads to the west. A good option is parking at Belladan's Water's Edge cache on Edgewater. The waypoint is below.

If heading to Cocagne Island, you may be able to carpool and we have provided a waypoint for a parking spot across from the island.

NEW CACHES

Many new caches have been placed in our area since the last event and there are plans for more before the event.

If you have not cached in the area before, or if you haven't cached here in a while, you will be surprised with the number of caches.

UPDATES

On a regular basis, we will be providing updates on ice conditions, on the weather, on the event and on caches. So check back often.

There have been trucks out on the ice for more than a week. The recent cold and the forecast of around -20 for the next week will certainly keep our hopes up.
A couple of new series have been added on trails in the area.

There will be draws for prizes at the event. forestfauna will donate one of his handcrafted hiking sticks for the door prize draw. Money for other prizes was obtained by the sale of a donated Magellan GPS that was won at a recent Moncton Caching event. Thank You to herminzz who will be running the draws.
.
El Nimrod from PEI will be bringing 50 Trackable "Confederation Trail" geocoins, designed by Landsharkz. They are available for $11. Here is the design http://img.geocaching.com/cache/large/6b1d131d-14ec-4483-8636-f3f5ff36799d.png
If you need caching supplies, Cachemporium will be present at the event

5 new caches were added on Cocagne Island. There are now 45 new caches on the trails in Bouctouche.

If you are bringing food to the event, there are a large number of stoves and refrigerators at Notre Centre.

Accomodations: There are a few hotels and B&B's in Shediac, including Seeley's motel which has a pool and rates of around $85. Many cachers also choose to stay in Moncton where there is also an abundance of caches. For example Hotel Moncton at Magnetic Hill has rooms for $69.

Present ice conditions look great for the event, and the weather forecast for next week calls for cool weather all week and with snow predicted for Wednesday and Thursday.

CacheupNB will be posting information on their site this weekend to help people find caching partners and car pool partners to go over to the islands or to the 45 new music caches on the Bouctouche Trail.

There will be a number of door prizes for the event. Châtelaine will be running these draws. To be eligible, you must sign Châtelaine's log book.
Herr Minnz will be selling tickets for a 50/50 draw to offset some costs. The remaining funds will go towards draws for lucky winners.
All prizes by Châtelaine and 50/50 by Herr Minnz DO NOT require fellow cachers to be present when the draws take place. They will insure that winners be contacted via geo caching email ....
In addition to donating a hiking stick for the door prize draws, forest fauna will have 4 or 5 aspen and cedar hiking sticks for sale as well.

More good news about caches in the area
Cableguy has informed us that his Punchline series now connects to the Gerry Anderson series via the same trail. He added 6 caches to the Gerry Anderson series , bringing the total there to 12. New hides should be published before the event. Total hike for the 25 caches would be about 5kms.
If you havent cached in that area, you will also be close to Cove Rd where Misha has a series of 13 caches.
Today we were also pleased to see that Belladan has put out 5 new caches in and around Shediac.

February 28, 2013

CONDITIONS Belladan, Chatelaine and PA did a maintenance run on half of Shediac Island caches. The ice was great with a couple of inches of snow on the surface. More snow is due before the event. Depending on the weather, Belladan and Pa may do more maintenance on one of the islands on Friday.

DOOR PRIZES Cache emporium is donating a fully stocked ammo can for the door prize draw

SATURDAY MORNING If interested in carpooling and/or finding caching partners, check CacheupNB or show up at NOTRE CENTRE to meet other cachers, before heading out . Also, come in and say hello and get a cup of coffee or tea.
