Geocache Description:

Pyatigorsk Park is named in honor of Pyatigorsk, Dubuque's Sister city in the Stavrapol region of the Russian Federation.

Bring your own pencil and please replace as found.

The park was designed by a Russian landscape architect, and was completed in 2005.

Pyatigorsk and Dubuque have maintained a sister city relationship since 1989.  Formed to promote cultural, business and educational exchangesbetween the two cities, both Dubuque and Pyatigorsk have hosted a number of visiting delegations from the other over the years, covering a wide variety of interests and events.

Pyatigorsk is a city of approximately 140,000 people, located in the Caucasian mountain range of southern Russia.  The name Pyatigorsk is derived from the Russian words that mean five mountains, so called for the five peaks of Beshtau, mashuk, and the three other mountains which overlook the city.  It was founded in 1780 and similar to Dubuque, is a center of education, and a leading tourist destination.  The city's tourism industry is based on the area's mineral springs and a number of health spas and resorts which utilize the curative properties of the mineral waters.  Pyatigorsk is also famous as the site of the 19th century duel and death of Mikhail Lermantov, one of Russia's greatest poets.  His home in the city is now a museum dedicated to his memory
