Former Speaker of the House John Nance Garner IV served under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He broke with Roosevelt philosophically, opposing sit-down strikes by unions, deficit spending and "packing" the US Supreme Court. Garner was re-elected to Congress and as Vice-President on the same day, making him only the second man (the first was Schuyler Colfax) to be Speaker of the House and President of the US Senate on the same day.
