Eighth Annual Ice Walk
Notre Centre Grande Digue, NB.
Saturday March 1, 2014
Caching on Shediac Island and Cocagne Island.


If you wish to experience winter caching, this is the event for you. Check the UPDATE section further down the page on a regular basis for updates on ice conditions, on the weather, on the event and on caches. Cachers who have logged a WILL ATTEND will receive email copies of announcements of these same updates.

EVENT HEADQUARTERS: NOTRE CENTRE

Registration will begin at NOTRE CENTRE at 8:30 am. Come in to meet other cachers and plan your caching day. Coffee will be available all day. Feel free to start later if that suits you better or if you already have many of the caches. Please check in with châtelaine before going out on the ice.

When you return from your caching, come in, relax and enjoy the company of fellow cachers and trade stories of your day. If you don't go out caching, please drop in and join in the fun. We will have warm comfort food, hot drinks, treats and sweets waiting for everyone. We have reserved the hall and the kitchen at NOTRE CENTRE until 6 pm and will begin closing down at 5 pm.

Herr Minnz will again be running a number of prize draws this year starting after 4 pm. Cachemporium were a popular addition to the event last year and will be onsite again this year if you need caching supplies.

NOTE: If who wish to bring food to be shared, we will have access to the large refrigeration units to keep food fresh all day. We will also have access to the stoves.

YOUR CACHING DAY

You will be able to cross the ice to grab caches on Shediac Island or on Cocagne Island. Parking locations are provided below and you may be able to carpool with other cachers. If you have done the island caches, bring your snowshoes anyway, because there will be many other new caches in the woods and on trails in this area. If that is not your kind of caching, then venture out on our country roads to pick up some of the many caches in the Memramcook to Bouctouche area.

CLOTHING, EQUIPMENT AND ICE SAFETY

The walk across the ice to Shediac Island may take up to 30 minutes if crossing from Edgewater and you will not be protected from the elements. The walk across to Cocagne Island will take a bit less time. You will spend a lot of time looking for the many caches on the islands and then you will have that same walk back. You should pace yourself and start back if you feel tired. After all, it is a long walk back.

Layering your clothing is the best method of staying warm. This would include long johns and/or snow pants for your legs. We recommend that you include additional clothing items in your backpack. Extra mitts or hand warmers could be helpful as you will be exposing hands to open caches and signing logs. Because of the length of the walk, you should bring a lunch with you and also bring plenty of liquids. Snow is usually not deep on the ice so snowshoes are often not necessary to get over there. Once you are on the islands, snowshoes are very helpful.

The conditions are always changing but we will keep everyone informed. We never venture out on the ice without being as positive as we can about safety. We base it on the activity on the ice and the weather and we also venture over ourselves before the event. We will cancel the ice crossing portion of the event if there is any doubt. Every year we wait until the commercial fishermen have been out on the ice with their trucks.

If heading to Shediac Island, cross to the North side or to the west side. On the island, travel from the North to the South along the trail on the West side of the Island. When you have done the caches on the South, return the way you came. DO NOT GO ON THE ICE ON THE SOUTH AND EAST SIDE OF THE ISLAND.

NEW CACHES

Many new caches have been placed in our area since the last event and there are plans for more before the event.

If you have not cached in the area before, or if you haven't cached here in a while, you will be surprised with the number of caches.

UPDATES

On a regular basis, we will be providing updates on ice conditions, on the weather, on the event and on caches. So check back often.
February 18
 *Yesterday morning five cachers did a maintenance run to Shediac Island and took care of 18 caches on the west and south sides of the island. Snowshoes were needed because of the recent storm. There have been snowmobiles and vehicles on the ice for a number of weeks now.
*A group is hoping to cross to Cocagne Island on Thursday morning to check on caches on the South side of the Island.
*A large number of caches have been placed in the area since the last Ice Walk. Check the map and you see a large number of new caches in Scoudouc , Barachois, and Memramcook to Aboujagane. There are also a number of new series in the Moncton and Riverview area.
*If you cannot participate in the caching, please drop in to chat. If you are bringing food, you can drop it off in the morning as there are large refrigeration units.

February 23
 *A maintenance run was done to the south section of Cocagne Island on Thursday. All 12 caches in that section were maintained and 4 new caches were added, including a puzzle cache. There are another 13 caches on the north end of the island.
*It has now been confirmed that all but 2 caches on Shediac Island are in great shape. We will check on those two caches this week.
*The ice conditions are great and there is plenty of snow on the ice and on the islands.
*Cache GC4YZ9B SURPRISE will be hidden near the event location. The cache is family friendly. The cache may not be published prior to the event but we will provide the coords at the event and in the next announcement. You will be able to log the cache after the event.
*You are invited to drop in and say hello and have a cup of coffee before heading out. At that time, you can also drop off any food for the event.
*chatelaine will be on hand to greet cachers and will be handling the log book for the event. Please come in and sign the book before or after your caching day.
*herrminnz will be handling the draws for door prizes and will be selling tickets for modified 50/50 draws to help pay for the hall. *We plan on issuing a final announcement on Friday which will include a contact phone number for the event.

February 27, 8 pm

*It has been very cold for a while and the ice conditions are great. We have seen trucks in the middle of the bay.
*The temperature Saturday morning will be -15C warming slowly to -6C in the middle of the afternoon. It will be very cold out in the open crossing the ice. Please dress accordingly.
*We found the snow to be deep on both our maintenance runs so we recommend snowshoes.
*The event goes on all day so you can begin your caching at any time. Registration is at 8:30 and you may be able to organize carpooling at that time. You can register upon your return if you so wish.
*All cachers will be eligible for door prizes. Tickets will also be sold for a 50/50 draw. It is not necessary to be present for the prize draws

*A fun cache (GC4YZ9B SURPRISE) N 46 17.691 W 064 33.586 will be placed near the center on Saturday morning.
*Alcohol is not permitted in Notre Centre.

February 28

This afternoon, I snowshoed over to the North side of Shediac Island from our place. It was an interesting crossing, very windy with blowing snow. I did maintenance on two caches that were reported in trouble and also checked on Micro Logic 51 on the island. Following my snowshoe tracks may get you to the latter cache.
