10th Annual Memorial CITO "Breach 1" Day 2 Cache In Trash Out Event

This cache has been archived.

Team Laxson: Yep, this was one of the (physically) tougher events we've setup and attended. There was so much stuff....and everywhere too!

Again, thanks to everyone that was able to make it out here Saturday, and to those that made it to Sunday too! There was a bunch of you that did both!

We'll see what we can next year....I think we'll try to keep it to one day though.......

"Breach 1" Day 2 Overview:

Join the annual Boulder County CITO and help clean up trash and debris from an area hit hard by the September 2013 floods! We will be working in an area along the St. Vrain River, just downstream from the town of Lyons. This area is known as “Breach 1”, where the mighty St. Vrain breached its banks and flooded acres and acres of open space agricultural land near the Cemex plant. Large trash includes construction materials, parts of houses and other buildings, tires, etc., all washed down from Lyons. We will hope to scour up to 50 acres for trash. Boulder County greatly appreciates all of the clean-up effort and time Geocachers have donated in the past, and look forward to another great project in an area greatly in need of some TLC!

SAFETY WARNING: This area contains flood debris, hazards, and many contaminants. It is recommended that you bring a N-95 rated mask - they are available at hardware stores; about $7 for a 2 pack. There are rusty nails everywhere in the field - some hidden under loose sand and other debris. Kids over 10 years old are welcome to attend with adult supervision. Due to the stated hazards, please consider leaving younger children at home

On Day 1, our focus was clearing the river bank first, then clearing the field. On Day 2 (this event), we will focus on the debris in the field.

As the event is over the lunch hour, we will be providing lunch for all volunteers. Oskar Blues has agreed to donate lunch for all volunteers!!

Everyone participating at this CITO will receive a 2014 CITO souvenir for their geocaching profile! Also, we'll be hosting a FREE DRAWING as a 'Thank You' for coming out! Prizes include: (and not limited to)

Weather:
Weather in mid/late April is usually warm and pleasant but can be unpredictable. Please bring sunscreen, appropriate clothing, and plenty of water.

Volunteers should bring:

Drinking water (1-2 liters per person)
Snack
Sunscreen
Work gloves (if you have them)
Hiking shoes/boots
Binoculars or camera (optional)

Boulder County will provide:
Extra large trash bags
Extra Work gloves
Extra Water
First aid kit

As a result of events like this and your participation, we have received an Award from Boulder County!

This is a Billzjeep inspired event

Who is Billzjeep?

Billzjeep began caching April 2001, logged 965 finds, had 5 hidden caches of his own, and was a recognized cacher in Colorado. He was unable to log his final finds because he passed away suddenly while geocaching with Jeeperz1&2 on March 6, 2004. Since his passing, Colorado has held a CITO event in memory of fallen cachers each year.

Past events held in his memory:
The First Annual Billzjeep CITO Event
The Second Annual Billzjeep CITO Event
3rd Annual Billzjeep CITO Event
Billzjeeps 4th Annual CITO @ Boyd Lake
BillzJeep 5th Annual CITO @Boyd Lake
6th Annual Tribute CITO; in honor of billzjeep
