Geocache Description:

2ml camo vial

Congregational Church (formerly Ebenezer Chapel)This originated out of the Presbyterian cause which started in Uppingham in 1672. Various barns, cottages or rooms were registered for worship prior to the building of the chapel in 1814. This housed a large and influential congregation until the mid twentieth century when it began to decline. The church building has now been converted to dwellings, but the manse alongside is still used as Uppingham Congregational House Church.A transcript of the Baptism Register from 1785 to 1837 is available for purchase from the publications page of this website and an unpublished history of the church can be found in Rutland County Museum and at ROLLR.

Manse. Early C19. Brick with painted stone dressings. Welsh slate roof, brick end stacks. Three storeys. Two window range. Double-fronted. C20 door. Fanlight above with interlaced Gothic glazing bars and keystone over, 8/8 sash windows to ground and first floors, with slightly cambered heads and keystones. C20 2-light casement windows to second floor beneath similar keystones. Low 2-storey earlier brick wing to east, probably originally a separate cottage.

Congregational church. Dated 1814, with later C19 porch and additions to rear. Red brick with stone dressings and hipped Welsh slate roof. Three round-headed windows and stone cornice to side. West front has stone bands, parapet and stone cornice.
Inscription in moulded frame reads "Ebenezer. Haec domus ad cultum Dei edificata An Dom 1814. Obsecro Jehova Prospera Nunc." Enclosed porch has central round-headed entrance with double doors flanked by round-headed windows. Pilasters carry stone entablature above.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
