1st European EarthCache Event: EarthCaches are cool, just think and cache them ;)
Karbon kojarzony jest głównie z węglem. Jednak na obszarze Zabrza występują poza utworami karbonu, trias, neogen i czwartorzęd. Starsze podłoże reprezentowane jest przez utwory zapadliska górnośląskiego. Młodsze należą do monokliny śląsko - krakowskiej, rozciągającej się w północnej części miasta oraz zapadliska przedkarpackiego, zajmującego południową jego część. W podłożu występują utwory karbonu produktywnego zbudowane z piaskowców, mułowców i iłowców przewarstwione pokładami węgla. Należą one do serii paralicznej, górnośląskiej serii piaskowcowej oraz serii mułowcowej. Miąższość karbonu produktywnego wynosi od kilkudziesięciu do ponad 1500 m.
W kopalni Guido ma się okazję przejść przez miąższość karbonu, podziwiając w ścianach chodników resztki pokładu węgla oraz przecinające je skały płonne, łupki ilaste i piaskowce. Geologiczne ciekawostki poziomu 320 pozwalają wyobrazić sobie, jakie masy torfu - pozostałości po lasach karbońskich - i jakie ciśnienie były potrzebne, by miejscami powstała tak potężna warstwa kopaliny użytecznej, jak węgiel określają górnicy.
Poziom 320 jest drugim, najgłębszym poziomem zabytkowej kopalni, wydrążonym na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, z systemem korytarzy opartych na dwóch wyrobiskach o łącznej długości około 2,5 km. Oferuje m.in. jedyną w Europie podwieszaną kolejkę górniczą, udostępnioną do ruchu turystycznego.
Ze względu na ograniczony czas ruchu turystycznygo i przerwy przy poszczególnych odsłonięciach geologicznych, każdy z serii Carbon-EarthCaches ma tylko dwa zadania, jedno "techniczne" i jedno opcjonalne.

Carboniferous is a term associated mainly with coal. However, in the Zabrze area in addition to the Carboniferous formations, Triassic, Neogene and Quaternary are to be found as well. The older bedrock is represented by the formations of the Upper Silesian Foredeep. The younger formations belong to the Silesian-Cracow monocline, which spreads through the northern part of the city, and to the Carpathian Foredeep occupying its southern part. In the bedrock, productive Carboniferous formations are to be found. They’re built of sandstones, siltstones and claystones layered with coal deposits. The thickness of the productive Carboniferous layer is from several dozen to over 1500 metres.
In Guido mine you’ll have a chance to take a walk through the Carboniferous thickness and take a look at the walls wih the remains of the coal deposits intersected by gangues, shale and sandstones.
The geological points of interest on the 320 level will fire your imagination and make you think of how large were the peat masses (the remains of the Carboniferous forests) and how big was the pressure needed to form such a big layer of coal.
Level 320 is the deepest level of the mine, drilled at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a system of corridors based on two excavations with a total length of over 2, 5 km. It offers, among others, the only miners hanging train in Europe available for tourists.
Due to the limited tourist visiting hours and breaks that need to be taken at the each outcrop, each cache from the Carbon-EarthCache series consists of only two tasks – one “technical” and one optional.
