There are literally thousands of War memorials around the country. Memorials were usually raised through public subscription to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of our country. The year 2014 was the centenary of the start of the First World War, so it was about time there was a series dedicated to War Memorials. There is an un-numbered series in Scotland called Lest-we-forget and another called Poppies on Parade. Any of these will happily be added to the War Memorial Series, just ask for a number. The name of this series “We will remember them”, was chosen from the very moving poem “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon. It is well worth searching out and reading.”
The Lindisfarne War Memorial stands on The Heugh overlooking the Priory with great views across to Lindisfarne Castle. Sir Edwin Lutyens was a key figure in determining how the missing and the dead should be commemorated; this memorial is one of 15 war crosses that Lutyens designed. It was carved in Doddington Stone by Mr Tully of nearby Belford. Lutyens chose this stone himself to chime with that of the priory. Lutyens was already familiar with Lindisfarne having worked on the castle's renovation in the Arts and Crafts style for Edward Hudson.
