Geocache Description:

Nuclear Wasteland 2 is a role-playing adventure game loosely based on the popular Wasteland computer game released in 1988. This is the sequel to Nuclear Wasteland 1 and it is highly recommended that you successfully complete it before attempting this game. You are an elite Regents Park Ranger, dispatched by Ranger HQ to respond to calls for help from the few remaining settlements in the wasteland. Gameplay takes place entirely in Regent's Park and Primrose Hill.

THE WASTELAND

The year is 2122 and the world has been devastated by nuclear war between the superpowers. Now, several decades later, you sign up as an elite Regents Park Ranger, part of a paramilitary group assigned to maintain order in the remaining enclaves of human civilisation that survived the nuclear devastation. Given your specialist training, you have to operate independently and keep regular contact with Ranger HQ via your kit Radio. All the mission updates you will receive will be in the form of hints that appear in your task list.

WASTELAND GEOGRAPHY

The post-apocalyptic world holds many unexpected dangers for the unwary traveller. Vast swathes of previously fertile land have been reduced, by nuclear strikes, to parched and arid deserts which are incapable of sustaining life. Only a few hardy settlements still survive against the odds in the wasteland. Dangerous radioactivity is limited to a few small areas which you must either avoid or wear appropriate protection to enter. You start off by visiting previously-genteel Rose Harbour, which was once famous for its arts and entertainment districts. Now populated by tramps and hobos, it still has a functioning police station to keep a semblance of law and order. Many elements of the desert rabble have even found gainful employment as casino workers in the largest settlement, Casino City. Despite its success against the odds, there are rumours of dark forces taking up residence in its city sewers. It may be facing a hostile takeover and it is your ultimate mission objective to save it - and the rest of the wasteland!

RANGER EQUIPMENT
When you are ready to leave the Ranger Center, you should have the following items in your inventory:
  • Health | Cash - This is a combined wallet and health meter which will tell you how much cash you have and how your health is doing. When your health falls to 0%, you perish and the game is over.
  • M19 Rifle - This is standard issue for all Regents Park Rangers. Ensure you check this out of the locker in the Ranger Center.
  • Radio - Your kit Radio is used for communication with Ranger HQ when out in the field. You can request promotions this way as well as learn new Skills.
  • Skills - This skills object contains all the Skills you can acquire as a Ranger. You may use these skills by selecting them in the appropriate context.
  • Compass - This enables you to navigate safely around the wasteland.
RANGER SKILLS

The full suite of ranger skills are: Medic, Lockpicking, Alarm Disarm, AT (Anti-Tank) Weapons, Electronics, and Demolitions. There are 6 official Ranger skills in total and you acquire them by using the Radio and spending a Skill Point for every new skill. Skill Points are earned by getting promoted, so make sure you regularly contact HQ with the Radio to check if you have qualified for a new rank! Be very careful to choose each new skill carefully as you will only earn 1 or 2 Skill Points for every rank you gain. Always ensure your skills are learned in the correct order as you will need them at different stages of your mission. There may also be unofficial skills you may discover in the course of your mission.

You start off with the Medic skill which is self-explanatory. Should you get injured, you have the basic first aid knowledge to patch yourself up, provided there are some bandages handy. You begin your mission with a starter kit of 6 bandages but more can be obtained from various shops. A supply shop is available in every city, only the prices may differ. You can also heal yourself by consuming food and drink, and rest assured there will be eating or drinking establishments in every settlement that you visit.

When you contact HQ, the Head Ranger will decide whether you qualify for a promotion. You earn experience for promotions by solving puzzles and killing enemy combatants. In fact, you will gain experience from killing just about anybody or anything in the lawless environment of the wasteland, but this does not mean it is right or moral to do so. Always strive to maintain the high standards of the Regents Park Rangers! Getting promoted means having more Skill Points to spend on learning useful new skills and becoming a more effective Ranger.

COMBAT

This is a combat-oriented RPG and fighting is a crucial aspect of gameplay. You have to press Attack repeatedly to hit a combatant until they are defeated, and you earn valuable experience for each kill. Bear in mind that although you are allowed to attack most characters you meet, you need to exercise good discretion like a good Ranger and only use violence as a last resort! Quite often, there are other ways to achieve your objective and you will gain valuable experience by finding those ways also. Check your health meter regularly to ensure you don't get too badly wounded, because you will die when you reach 0%. Remember - death in the wasteland is FINAL.

Grenades can be bought from supply shops to assist in battle. You can hurl a grenade at an enemy combatant who will usually suffer damage from the explosion.

For this mission, you also have the option to recruit one other member into your Ranger party. There are mercenaries for hire - usually at a cost, and he or she will assist you greatly in combat. However, you will still receive 100% of the damage from your opponent, and if you die, the mission is over.

Only drop an item from your inventory if you think you no longer need it. Dropping an item means it will be lost in the radioactive dust of the wasteland forever.

COMPLETING THE MISSION

The entire mission will take at about 4-5 hours to complete as a rough guide, but expect to take a bit longer if things don't go to plan. The hints in the Task list will assist you throughout your mission. A few of the tasks are essential but you do not have to complete every single task to successfully finish the mission. After completing your mission, you will need to locate the physical geocache and sign the logbook to be able to claim this cache on geocaching.com. Logs without a logbook signature may be deleted. If possible, please include a screenshot of your final mission screen in your log (as long as no coordinates are showing).

RANGER HOME TRUTHS

Before you embark on your mission, these experienced Rangers have some very important tips for you. Do not begin your mission without taking heed! Write them down if necessary. It may well spell the difference between success and abject failure.

Specialist Bessa Voigtlander

"Only learn a skill whenever you know you're going to need it! Otherwise keep at least a Skill Point (or two) spare. I hear you can also learn some unexpected skills out in the field."

"Don't just start shooting if there might be some other way to persuade someone to give you what you want. But I've found that no problem is insurmountable if you have an assault rifle!"

"You only have a finite amount of cash so spend wisely. Don't blow it all on drink. You will find various items that you can sell for cash, usually you can tell if you should keep or just sell an item. Don't carry around too much junk with you."

"Examine every room you're in very carefully. Read everything. I cannot emphasise this enough!"

Captain Rick "Brick" Argus

"There's plenty of fine food and drink to be had in some of these towns! The burritos keep you going but the Rump of Tramp is delicious, washed down with some good old Firewater! It really heals you up well. So if tying bandages isn't your thing, bring a picnic."

"If you have the good fortune to be welcomed in Savage Village, beware of the guy with the bazooka! It wouldn't be a good idea to fight him directly, he'll turn you into a blood sausage!"

"Never underestimate the usefulness of a toaster in the wasteland!"

"See that flag behind me? We captured that from one of Finster's robot sentries out in the desert. Does it look familiar to you? Memorise it very carefully. You might need it if you ever find that evil Finster and his secret hideout!"
